Mary J. Blige Talks the State of R&B: They Call It “Popular Music” When “Justin Timberlake & Adele Get Ahold Of It”

Published: Thursday 18th Aug 2022 by Sam

Mary J. Blige has long been renowned for keeping it candid – both in her music and when articulating her views.

As such, it was of little surprise that the R&B royal didn’t hold back when quizzed about the modern state of the genre many hail her the Queen of.

Full story below…

Chopping it up with her longtime friend and collaborator Diddy on Instagram Live, Blige began by saying:

“You can’t kill something that’s in our DNA. It’s going to keep transitioning from generation to generation to generation to generation. They were trying to kill it.”

Stressing that music like hers, Chaka Khan’s and Marvin Gaye’s is “healing,” Blige added:

“They wanna call it ‘popular music’ with Adele and Justin Timberlake get ahold of it, so now it’s ‘popular music’… but it’s been popular music! We’ve been had it!”

The Black artists just need to create RNB music and slap “POP” on the category

    • Lmfao_Hoe August 18, 2022

Other than Chris Brown and The Weeknd being mainstream wise —> Summer Walker, Ari Lennox, Jazmine Sullivan, H.E.R., Lucky Daye, Giveon, Rini, Brent Faiyaz, The Internet, Thundercat, Daniel Casaer, Snoh, Masego, Ella Mai, SZA, Jhene Aiko, etc all say hello and let’s not act like there aren’t plenty more talented musicians out there overshadowed by favoritism, ass kissing, payola, or sneaky favors from this same industry.

      • XTINA August 18, 2022

They can play the same game as their white counterparts. Just call yourself Pop and bam, you’re pop.

Adele doesn’t even make R&B music! Why are R&B artists and fans alike so pressed over her?

    • Dc August 18, 2022

Yes she does very soulful and she emulates black artists it’s so clear

      • Slh August 18, 2022

        Adele makes Celine Dion music

      • Moulin August 18, 2022

Her music sounds nothing like the Mary’s, Anita’s, Toni’s, Fantasias, beyonces, Keyshias or Summers just to name a few. Adele’s music is POP and like Slh said More reminiscent of Celine Dion – adult contemporary. Sure she has some blues and soulful undertones but it’s not R&B and I wish y’all will stop saying it is. Her music isn’t even popular in the Black community like that. We are not huge Adele supporters.

I don’t see JT nor Adele in her lane.
JT is a bit of everything but mostly Pop with different influences from R&B to EDM.

Adele is not R&B at all. Since when !?!

  8. Hmm August 18, 2022

Recod labels don’t support black r&b music like they support white pop music . There’s a lot of good r&b out right now but it isn’t being heavily marketed like pop so a lot of people don’t get to hear it. We need black owned radio stations and black owned media again, so that we can promote our own to our own.

  9. XYZ August 19, 2022

Yes, Mary, it was even popular when you did it. RnB is just not the flavour of the day and honestly, how should it with the boring ass music everyone (including you, Mary) is releasing. RnB used to be diversified, it had great beats, songs to dance to, songs to cry to, songs to f-k to – now its just suicidal bathroom music
